終端仿真器是一種在其它顯示架構內模擬“啞”視頻終端的計算機軟件。終端窗口允許用戶訪問控制臺及應用程序如命令行界面，文本用戶界面軟件等等。雖然如今的圖形用戶界面無處不在，但還是有一些任務用命令行執行效果最好。現代桌面環境已經安裝了很多終端仿真程序。以GNOME、KDE和XFCE為例，用戶可以把GNOME Terminal、Konsole和Terminal作為默認的終端仿真器，但它們未必是你的最優選擇。linuxlinks的這篇文章介紹了九種Linux自由終端仿真器。包括：urxvt，支持Unicode的類RXVT模擬器;Sakura，基于Vte的終端仿真器;ROXTerm，帶標簽的GTK+ 2.0 終端仿真器等等。
